Lewis Elementary School Reading Program

Over the summer the Firefighter's Association contributed over $300 in fire/safety related books to the library at Lewis Elementary School. A special area of the library has been set aside for the children to select and read the many books related to fire fighting and fire safety.

Members from the Fire Department also spend time with the many classes by sitting down and reading to them and also answering any questions the children may have. Fire Prevention Week served as the kick-off for this great program and instills a strong relationship with the children and the faculty of Lewis Elementary School, the Fire Department and the Firefighter's Association.

Fire Explorer Program

We would like to take the opportunity to tell you about an exciting and fun experience focused on youths between the ages of 12 and 21. The Military Police and the Fire Department are sponsoring a joint explorer post. The explorer post is dedicated to the education and hands-on learning that is only gained through real world experiences.

The primary focus will be to allow the youths to learn, at their own pace and comfort level, what the Fire Department and Military Police do on a day to day basis. The explorers will work side by side with the Officers and Firefighters under supervised and controlled situations. The safety of the youths will always be paramount, just as it is within each Public Safety organization.

The explorers can expect to learn a great deal about both of these extremely important and diverse public service organizations on this installation. The areas of interest that the explorer post would like to cover are many and varied between the two agencies, a short list of topics follows below:

Mental and physical health in regards to these types of jobs
The importance of education in continuing your career
The willingness and desire to serve the community
The needs of the community versus the needs of the public service entities
The importance of charitable & non-profit work within these fields
Improving character and establishing confidence

We would also like to stress to the parents of the prospective youths, that this explorer post as public safety entities within this installation will always hold your child’s safety above all else, regardless of the cost.

We look forward to sharing with you and your children many of life’s important lessons. The lessons that we have learned by what is unfortunately termed ‘trial & error.’ Only because we as young working adults did not have access to organizations that were so diligent and proud of what they do and want to share it with the young adults who are very much part of our future.

We look forward to helping this installation become a more treasured crown jewel in the U.S. Army, by investing in its most important resource-people.

Fort Irwin Fire Fighter's Association

The Firefighter's Association was formed to promote community and charitable activities at Fort Irwin. Contributions include the Fire Explorer Program, Toys for Tots, and the Sarah Colby Cancer Fund to name a few. The association holds an annual golf tournament and pancake breakfast to help fund these activities.

Toys for Tots Campaign

The Fire Department is a major contributor to the Barstow Area Toys for Tots Campaign. Last year, with the help of Santa, the Lewis Elementary School and IAP raised thousands of dollars in toys for almost 600 deserving children on Fort Irwin - almost 2/3 of the total contributions raised at Fort Irwin. For more information, to help and/or contribute please contact Deputy Chief Ray Smith at #380-2584.
