Fort Irwin
As the support services contractor at this remote U.S. Army installation near Barstow, California, IAP’s employees help operate what is essentially a small city with a population of 23,000-26,000 in the middle of the Mojave Desert.
Fort Irwin is home to the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment and is a key training site for soldiers from across the country. They engage in sophisticated war games using equipment that has been modified by IAP craftspeople to closely resemble hardware that could be used by the enemy when warfighters are in a real battle zone.
In addition to direct support for the training mission, IAP employees perform maintenance and operations in the public works area and on the central barracks. They also operate Fort Irwin’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation Program, which provides much needed recreational and social support for soldiers and their families.
In 1998, the customer added Army Community Services to IAP’s contract, marking the first time the Army trusted a contractor to assist soldiers with easing the emotional and financial burdens that can come along with military life. That effort includes such things as domestic abuse prevention and food assistance programs.
After soldiers based at Fort Irwin were deployed to Iraq, IAP employees developed an innovative reintegration program designed to help soldiers more easily readjust to family life. Due to its success, officials at the Department of Defense have used IAP’s program as a benchmark for post-deployment programs at other sites.
