IAP and Riverside Team Awarded NMFS Observers Contract
Cape Canaveral, FL – IAP Worldwide Services, Inc. (IAP), a leader in scientific and technical assistance, in partnership with Riverside Technology, inc., has been awarded multiple contract task orders totaling $58 million by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for Observers Program services to the Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC). The work will be performed jointly by the Riverside Technology and IAP team.
The SEFSC is one of the six regional National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) centers supporting the scientific mission of NOAA NMFS (NOAA Fisheries). From 1972 to present, NOAA Fisheries have deployed fishery observers to collect catch and bycatch data from U.S. commercial fishing and processing vessels. The NMFS Observers Program monitors 47 different fisheries programs that log more than 77,000 observer days at sea each year. The six regional NMFS centers monitor fishing activities on all U.S. coasts, collecting data for a range of conservation and management issues.
The overall objective of each Observer Program is to obtain large enough quantities of reliable and quality data for the ultimate purpose of giving the NMFS the ability to make decisions and manage fisheries. Under this contract, the Riverside team will optimize the benefits to living marine resources of the nation through sound science, data collection, and management activities that include providing qualified Observers for each SEFSC vessel deployment.
Tasks performed by the Riverside and IAP staff in support of the SEFSC Observers Program will include collecting marine data year-round in the waters of the South Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean.
“IAP is honored to continue to support our nation’s environmental programs and our longstanding relationship with the NOAA SEFSC.” said William Thomas, IAP Director of Professional & Technical Services.
The work performed under this contract will support seven NMFS SEFSC Observers Programs operating from three SEFSC labs (Miami, FL; Panama City, FL; and Galveston, TX). The Observers Programs that the Riverside Team will support include: SE Shrimp Trawl Observer Program, Atlantic Pelagic Longline Observer Program, SE Shark and Coastal Gillnet Observer Program, SE Shark Bottom Longline Observer Program, Gulf of Mexico Reef Fish Observer Program, Gulf of Mexico Menhaden Observer Program, and Platform Removal Observer Program. IAP’s website (www.iapws.com) will provide details regarding employment opportunities related to this contract.
